Francis Xavier Can Nguyen was born in in Son Miêng, Hà Ðông, Vietnam. A layman, he worked as a catechist with the priests of the Foreign Missions of Paris. He was arrested during a persecution of Christians. Because he refused to deny his faith or step over a cross, he was strangled to death in prison in Ô Cau Giay, Hanoi. He was canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul II.
